When Paul wrote, in 2 Corinthians 4:7, “we have this treasure in jars of clay”, he was referring to the small, quickly made unglazed clay vessels that were used just once or twice and then thrown away.
The nearest equivalent we can get to this today is the disposable plastic cups you might obtain from a vending machine.
The painting shows a used, stained and slightly battered disposable cup full of priceless gems and jewels. Do you sometimes feel marred or damaged by life's experiences? If you are a believer, you have heaven’s treasure within.
We could paraphrase the Bible verse: “We have all of heaven’s treasure in fragile, disposable cups”.
